Project 10# Sousveillance Tool
Description
I used New York Times Api to create a Souseillance Tool on showing data of articles reporting government surveillance, facial recongizition, illegal surviellance. You select the section your interested in reading and click the search bar.
Design Process
In Tactics and Poetics of Invisible Writing by Amy Suo Wu , she inspired me on what type of Sousveillance Tool I should design. I was interested in this particular section "Discipline and Punish", Wu introduced French philosopher Michel Foucault who described surveillance as an instrument of control for disciplinarian measures derived from a traditional focus on Western criminology. But the problem of digital surveillance transcends this. It also concerns the alleged neutrality of the algorithm that obscures the forms of gendered, raced, and classed surveillance practices that are perpetuated in the name of general interest and national security. My first idea was using an API relating to people who were wrongfully accused of terrorism or associated actions of it. I think I was overstretching my capabilities of accessing that type of information.
I was able to find a similar topic with a proper API that can help me visualize my Sousveillance Tool. New York Times API was the perfect choice in gathering data of articles that report incidents of government surveillance, facial recognition, illegal surveillance.
Reflection
The purpose of my Sousveillance Tool is to show data from a reliable API that exposes articles of the type of surveillance going on with the government. I realize that my first idea was definitely complex compared to my final design as finding an API with wrongfully accused terrorism is hard. New York API is an ideal API for my topic because I could see whenever these articles relate to the misuse of Surveillance going on in America. I definitely want to see other ways of formatting my Tool.Code
